Long-term preservation: Technology
The frontend of the Library Archiving and Access System consists of two different basic technical components. Each of them was adopted for specific purposes.
- The Content of the Munich Digitization Center is being managed by the so-called Zentrale Erfassungs- und Nachweisdatenbank (ZEND), a powerful and complex selfmade tool, designed to manage all workflow tasks.
- All the other electronic resources of the library wich have to be archived are currently being processed with DigiTool.
The archival storage of the data is being done by the Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) archival system of the LRZ. TSM is a client-server-application for heterogeneous environments and bases on open standards, e. g. the IEEE Mass Storage Reference Model. The system provides the essential functionalities in long-term preservation.

The structure of the Library Access and Archiving System (BABS) pursues to the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) reference model and considers all necessary processes of long-term preservation. The system is modularly extended. BABS thereby aims to integrate existing technical solutions and to organize a smooth cooperation with the existing library systems thereby.
