A selection of the most important current projects by September 2008
The currently biggest digitization project of the Munich Digitization Center aims the complete digitization of at least one copy of every printed 16th century work published in German speaking countries which is preserved in the Bavarian State Library. Every volume is published instantly on the web. Access is free of charge. The long-term preservation of all images in a high quality ensures various opportunities of usage in the future. Public-private Partnership of the Bavarian State Library with Google
In the coming years the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek will digitise its complete copyright-free historical holdings of printed works within the framework of a public-private partnership. A duration of several years is scheduled for the undertaking and presumably over one million titles will be scanned in the course of the project. The Munich Digitization Center plays an important role in this context. It manages the processing and online publication of the library digital copy of every scanned book as well as the long-term preservation of all 300 Million scans inside the storage system of the Leibniz Supercomputing Center.
IMPACT – IMProving ACcess to Text
IMPACT is a project funded by the European Commission. It aims to significantly improve access to historical text and to take away the barriers that stand in the way of the mass digitization of the European cultural heritage.
The multilingual MICHAEL service allows exploration of digital collections from museums, archives, libraries and other cultural institutions from across Europe. Whether you are interested in art or archaeology, family history or planning holidays, the Romans or modern History, MICHAEL can show you what is available.
nestor is a cooperative project of libraries, archives and museums as well as of leading experts forming a network of expertise in long-term preservation and long-term availability of digital resources. A goal of this project (funded by the BMBF, German Ministery of Education and Research) is the constitution of a permanent form of organization for all issues of long-term preservation as well as the development of national and international agreements and the assignment of tasks.
The Bavarian State Library has been working on an extension of its long-term preservation infrastructure. In a pilot project, a Library Archiving and Access System (BABS) for the preservation of internet publications has been developed. The technical infrastructure of the archival system is realized in partnership with the Leibniz Computing Center Munich (LRZ).
The Library of Bavarian Online Resources (Die Bayerische Landesbibliothek Online - BLO)
The Bayerische Landesbibliothek Online (BLO) is the most comprehensive portal on Bavarian history, comprising numerous electronic resources, e.g. historic maps, photographic collections, portrait galleries, digitised journals, manuscripts and handwritings, a collection of newspapers and more.
The use of complex, non-textual data and documents is becoming more and more important. Today's digital libraries, however, do not support these data optimally because they are based on the assumption that all documents can be described textually. The goal of the project PROBADO is to develop tools and systems as well as to create methods and workflows that allow academic libraries to treat different common documents in the same way as textual documents. Focused at the beginning are the domains e-learning, music and 3D-graphic.
Virtual Library Musicology (Virtuelle Fachbibliothek Musikwissenschaft - ViFaMusik)
ViFaMusik, the central portal for music and musicology, allows you to access an extensive digital library containing the latest scholarly research and online resources. Using a single search engine you can find bibliographical data, entries to experts and research projects as well as current events to your search topic.
The DFG-Viewer is a web service for accessing digital content located in decentral library repositories. It presents heterogeneous digital resources in a consistent surface. It was developed by incitement of the German Research Foundation (DFG) by the following libraries: Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel, Sächsische Landesbibliothek - Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden, Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Sachsen-Anhalt and the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.
